Itinerary

Arrival in Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. Spend the day resting or exploring the local area. In the evening, meet your guide for a briefing on the trek ahead, covering all essential details and preparing you for the journey.

Nale Moru Gate to Simba Camp

Elevation: Start at 1,950 meters (6,400 feet); end at 2,650 meters (8,694 feet)

Distance: 8 km (5 miles)

Duration: 3-4 hours of hiking

Camp: Simba Camp

Begin your ascent from Nale Moru gate, trekking through farmland and pine forests. This relatively gentle first day ends at Simba Camp, where you can enjoy views over the Kenyan plains.

Simba Camp to Kikelewa Cave

Elevation: Start at 2,650 meters (8,694 feet); end at 3,600 meters (11,811 feet)

Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)

Duration: 6-7 hours of hiking

Camp: Kikelewa Cave

Continue your ascent through moorland, reaching the Second Cave with majestic views of Kibo’s eastern ice fields. The trek then proceeds to the secluded Kikelewa Cave for overnight camping.

Kikelewa Cave to Mawenzi Tarn

Elevation: Start at 3,600 meters (11,811 feet); end at 4,330 meters (14,206 feet)

Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)

Duration: 3-4 hours of hiking

Camp: Mawenzi Tarn

A short but steep climb up grassy slopes offers superb views and leads you to Mawenzi Tarn, spectacularly situated beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and exploring the surrounding area.

Acclimatization Day at Mawenzi Tarn

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Elevation: Start at 4,330 meters (14,206 feet); end at 4,700 meters (15,419 feet)

Distance: 9 km (5.6 miles)

Duration: 4-5 hours of hiking

Camp: Kibo Hut

Cross the lunar desert of the 'Saddle' between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, reaching Kibo Hut at the base of the Kibo crater wall. Prepare for your midnight summit attempt.

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and down to Horombo Hut

Elevation: Start at 4,700 meters (15,419 feet); ascend to 5,895 meters (19,341 feet); descend to 3,720 meters (12,205 feet)

Distance: 21 km (13 miles)

Duration: 11-15 hours of hiking

Camp: Horombo Hut

Begin the final ascent near midnight, climbing steeply upwards to Gillman’s Point on the crater rim, then trek along the rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate - Departure

Elevation: Descend from 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) to 1,860 meters (6,102 feet)

Distance: 18 km (11.2 miles)

Duration: 5-6 hours of hiking

Complete your descent through forested slopes to the Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificates and celebrate your achievement. Transfer back to Arusha for a final night’s rest or proceed directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.

Enjoy some final moments in Tanzania with a leisurely breakfast at your hotel. Later, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight, carrying unforgettable memories of your climb.
