The only route with sleeping huts

Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo huts provide bunk beds, mattresses, and shared facilities. Carry only a day pack, no camping gear. For comfort and better recovery.

A well-established path

Marangu has been climbed for over a century. Clear, well-marked trail managed by experienced staff. No surprises.

Horombo as an acclimatisation base

The 6-day route gives two nights at Horombo Hut (3,720m). Extra altitude time plus a short acclimatization walk greatly boosts summit success.

Gentler overall gradient

Marangu is Kilimanjaro’s least technical route. Wide paths and gentle gradients make it accessible to more fitness levels.

What makes Marangu the most historic Kilimanjaro route?

Marangu is the oldest established route on Kilimanjaro and the only one that uses permanent sleeping huts rather than tents. That makes it a genuinely different experience — you sleep in a bunk bed with a mattress at each stop, and the facilities at the camps are more developed than anywhere else on the mountain.

It is also the most direct route, which is both its appeal and its limitation. The shorter ascent profile gives your body less time to adjust to the altitude, which is one reason why its summit success rate is lower than longer routes. If you have the time, adding an extra acclimatisation day significantly improves your chances.

Marangu follows the same path for descent as ascent, which means you walk familiar ground on the way down. Some climbers appreciate this; others find it less varied. Either way it is a classic, well-managed route with a long history on the mountain.

Marangu route is best for you if you:
  • You prefer sleeping in huts rather than tents.
  • You want the most straightforward and well-managed route.
  • You are on a tighter budget: Marangu is generally the most affordable option.
  • You are comfortable with a more direct ascent profile.
  • You want a shorter overall trip.

Your Marangu Route Itinerary

Each day on the mountain, clearly laid out.

You enter the park at Marangu Gate and walk through dense montane forest to Mandara Hut. The trail is wide and well-maintained. It is a good introduction to the mountain.

Duration: 3-4 hours  Elevation: 1,830m to 2,720m

The trees thin out and the landscape opens up completely. You step onto the Shira Plateau for the first time, a wide open highland with big skies and your first clear views of Kibo, the main summit cone of Kilimanjaro.

Duration: 6-8 hours  Elevation: 2,720m to 3,720m

An optional extra day at Horombo for acclimatisation. You walk toward Zebra Rocks or higher on the trail before returning to sleep at the same altitude. This day makes a significant difference to your summit chances.

Duration: 3-4 hours  Elevation: 3,720m (day walk to ~4,000m)

A long crossing of the barren alpine desert between Horombo and Kibo Hut. The landscape is stark and otherworldly — very little vegetation survives at this altitude. Kibo Hut sits at the base of the final summit cone.

Duration: 5-6 hours  Elevation: 3,720m to 4,703m

You set off around midnight for the summit. The final section to Gilman’s Point and then Uhuru Peak is the most demanding part of the entire route — steep scree and rock at altitude. Summit at sunrise if conditions allow, then descend all the way to Horombo.

Duration: 12-15 hours  Elevation: 4,703m to 5,895m to 3,720m

A final walk down through the moorland and forest to Marangu Gate. Certificates are issued at the park office.

Duration: 4-6 hours  Elevation: 3,720m to 1,830m

Marangu Route FAQ

Marangu has a reputation as the easiest route but that is partly misleading. The gradient is gentler and the facilities are more comfortable, but the shorter ascent profile actually makes altitude sickness more likely.

The 6-day option with an acclimatisation day at Horombo is much more manageable than the 5-day version.

The three main huts: Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo offer dormitory-style bunk beds with mattresses and basic pillows. There are separate toilet and washing facilities.

Horombo is the most developed with a dining hall and reasonable facilities.

Kibo Hut is the most basic, positioned at the base of the final summit cone.

The direct ascent profile gives your body less time to adjust to the altitude compared to longer routes like Lemosho or Machame.

The 6-day option with an extra night at Horombo significantly improves your chances and is always our recommendation.

Yes, it is the most family-friendly route on Kilimanjaro. The hut accommodation, clear trail, and gentler gradient make it more accessible than camping routes.

Children who are used to multi-day hiking can manage it with the right preparation and pacing.

Private rooms are available at Mandara and Horombo huts but they book up quickly during peak season.

We can arrange this as part of your climb booking, let us know when you enquire and we will confirm availability.
