The only route with sleeping huts
Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo huts provide bunk beds, mattresses, and shared facilities. Carry only a day pack, no camping gear. For comfort and better recovery.
A well-established path
Marangu has been climbed for over a century. Clear, well-marked trail managed by experienced staff. No surprises.
Horombo as an acclimatisation base
The 6-day route gives two nights at Horombo Hut (3,720m). Extra altitude time plus a short acclimatization walk greatly boosts summit success.
Gentler overall gradient
Marangu is Kilimanjaro’s least technical route. Wide paths and gentle gradients make it accessible to more fitness levels.
What makes Marangu the most historic Kilimanjaro route?
Marangu is the oldest established route on Kilimanjaro and the only one that uses permanent sleeping huts rather than tents. That makes it a genuinely different experience — you sleep in a bunk bed with a mattress at each stop, and the facilities at the camps are more developed than anywhere else on the mountain.
It is also the most direct route, which is both its appeal and its limitation. The shorter ascent profile gives your body less time to adjust to the altitude, which is one reason why its summit success rate is lower than longer routes. If you have the time, adding an extra acclimatisation day significantly improves your chances.
Marangu follows the same path for descent as ascent, which means you walk familiar ground on the way down. Some climbers appreciate this; others find it less varied. Either way it is a classic, well-managed route with a long history on the mountain.
